When I was looking I never noticed much difference in price between detroit, mercedes, or cats. I personally don't know much about them, guess it all depends on how many miles the truck has on it and how much you will be driving. He has had quite a few and claims 5-600,000 miles is all they run before he rebuilds them. I have a friend that runs a fairly large trucking company and he told me to stay away from them. I've been running the MB engine in one of my trucks for 4 years now. If you are getting that era truck try to find one with an 04 pre EGR engine in it.Īny brand of engine with EGR is just a crap shoot from what I see. In fact I have seen complete Mercedes engines for sale for $8,000 or so. I am of the camp that if I can buy it $10,000 cheaper I will.

Detroit bought out Mercedes so you can go there for repairs. That helps on some repairs also.įuel mileage is similar to our 12.7. You can also overhaul one cylinder if you need to. From what I have seen is the parts are more expensive but the labor is less. I don't know how far the Mercedes will run but we are going to find out. I have seen many with 1.3- 1.5 million and still running with only minor repair. Posted 10:46 (#2902997 - in reply to #2902970) Subject: Re: Mercedes Benz engines in semi trucks 2005 era. A friend of mine was a mechanic and all he did was overhaul Mercedes Benz engines said they are junk. I know a contractor that has one wished he never seen it. I would be interested in hearing your opinion after the repairs. Posted 10:33 (#2902970 - in reply to #2902960) Subject: Re: Mercedes Benz engines in semi trucks 2005 era.

They say the mileage makes up for having to replace the motor at 750k. Word on the road is it is a throwaway motor.not sure how reliable this is but its coming from a fleet that pulls double pneumatics. I had a coolant leak on 5 and 6 head so it is getting repairs next week. The engine break is really powerfull it seems. I just bought a 2006 sterling with the Benz engine. No experience here, but prior discussions run about 10 to 1 NEGATIVE. Posted 10:24 (#2902953 - in reply to #2902936) Subject: Re: Mercedes Benz engines in semi trucks 2005 era. Will a Mercedes get past 800,000 milestone farther than a Detroit without needing a overhaul or having high oil consumption? Or are all brand names wore out at that amount of miles?Īnd aren't MB and Detroit companies linked together in production some how? What is the general consensus?Good, bad, UGLY OR, RUN!!!? What is the general farmer opinion on MB truck engines as opposed to the Detroit of the same era?Seems there are quite a few M B around.
